Headers/Footers

How do you delete a paragraph symbol in a header or footer? There is no other information in either. Delete and backspace key don't work, "cutting" it doesn't work. There must be a way. Does anyone know?

You don't! There isn't any need to. It isn't taking up and space or doing
anything. Why did you want to delete them? If it really bothers you to be
able to see it if you have the "Show/Hide" button clicked, click "View",
"Header/Footer", click inside the Font Size dropdown, type "1", then press
"Enter". It will be so small you can't tell it is there.

Thanks Bill for your message. I thought it did make a difference; it seemed to in another document but after checking what I'm working on, the paragraph symbols didn't add lines. Thanks again.

Go into the header. Select all (Ctrl-A), Delete.

Actually this can cause a problem in Word 2002. In earlier versions, if you
delete header content, the header paragraph actually does disappear. In Word
2002 it not only stays but takes on the style of other header paragraphs (if
you modify the Header style). So say that, for example, you want to put a
border on your header text in one section and have no header in another (or
a different First Page Header). If you modify the Header style to include
the border, then you get a bordered empty paragraph in all sections. Worse
still, an undeletable header paragraph in Normal.dot will cause formatting
problems in labels.
