Is it possible to rename the column designations? So instead of having A, B,
C and so on, you could rename then to whatever that column is for?

You can put tetx in Row 1, choose Tools>Options>View tab, and *uncheck* Row &column headers, and then select A2 and choose
Windows>Freeze panes. That's about as close as you can get
