Help - Can't edit Duration1 field

R

Rick Williams

I am attempting to use Risk+ with Project 2003 (desktop version, not
server). Risk+ uses the Duration1 field to hold the Optimistic duration and
Duration2 to hold the Pessimistic estimate. In my schedule, though (58,000+
tasks), Duration1 is not editable - in fact, the values are greyed out when
I select the cell. Duration2, 3, etc. can all be edited, but not Duration1.

Can anyone please help me with this? How can I 'fix' Duration1? I have used
MS Project since it was introduced, but I have never seen this problem.
There are no formulas in Duration1, BTW.

Thanks,
Rick Williams

Those are the symptoms of a formula. I'd double check that there is not a
formula. The formula may be blank, but the field may still be set to use a
formula.

Give that a try and see what happens.

If you want me to take a look at it, you can send it to me.
I have a macro which will strip out identifying data you can use if security
is an issue:

Hi Rick,

The only thing I can suggest to check: you note that there are no
formulas in the Duration1 field, can you confirm that the "Custom
attributes" section of the Customize Fields dialog box is set to None.
Even if there is no formula entered in the Formula dialog box, having
anything other than "None" selected will cause the field to be
calculated and therefore not accepting entries.

As I don't use Risk+, I'm afraid I can't suggest any other ideas.
Duration1 is used for PERT Analysis in MS Project but even after running
through PERT, the field is still editable.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

I think the others have your real answer. However, if all else fails, remap
the Risk+ field to another Duration field. To do that:
Risk Analysis/Field Usage...
You can change "Minimum Remaining Duration" to one of the other duration
fields, but not 2,3, or 10. Make sure other users know that you changed from
default. If they try to rerun your analysis they will get different results
if they map as default.

We routinely get errors becuase our Text30 field is a drop down in our
default project template. Risk+ doesn't care for that much either. You may
want to check that as well on your Duration1.
