HELP Font has changed on it's own??!!

Has anyone had this problem?

Creatd a document in Word 2000 using Times New Roman font.
Saved and closed it. Opened later to find all the text in
the document had changed to some weird looking greek font.
It will not let me change the font to anything readable.
When I try to change it to Times or Arial the text just
changes to squares.

Can anyone help???
