Help!! Locking documents!!

BNG

Hello. I am having a bit of trouble with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 and
Excel 2003 programs. Some how, these programs have become locked and will
not allow me to type in them. When I try to type, the bottom task bar says,
"Modification unable to occur because the document is locked." It is as if
these programs have been put in a read-only format only accidentally. How do
I fix this? Are there any hot keys I can use to solve this problem? Help!!!
I need to type a paper and I can't figure this out!

Thank you.

Have you activated the programs? Go to the Help menu and select Activate
Product. If you have already activated, you'll get a message box to that
effect. Otherwise, the activation process will begin. See “OFFXP: About
Office Activation and Reduced Functionality†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293151 (this article is for Office XP but
applies to Office 2003 as well).

Hi BNG. I have been searching for an answer to the same
question for a couple of weeks now. I have a number of
documents that I originally drafted on my desktop and
sent them to a USB memory card for use with a laptop or
other computer. They open up fine but when trying to edit
them, I get the same message as you. (modification
unable....because document is locked) I have checked the
settings in properties and the read-only option is not
selected. Like you, I am frustrated with the whole affair
and am sure there must be a simple solution. If I find an
answer I will e-mail you back and would greatly
appreciate you doing the same. Thanks. MP

In your case, the problem is almost certainly attributable to trying to open
the document from removeable media. Copy the file to the hard drive before
opening it.
