HELP NEEDED: Web site design with WORD 2002

J

Jan

I designed a web site using word 2002.

It works fine and looks great on my computer monitor and with my browser
(Firefox or Internet Explorer) but is messed up on other systems.

One issue is tiling vs. no-repeat setting for background. I don't want the
images I'm using on any of the pages to repeat. I want them to fill the
entire frame regardless of monitor or browser. I am using a simple verticle
frame set with left navigation.

Another issue is formatting. The following also vary from system to system:
The way fonts are displayed (sometimes larger - or different font all
together)
The position of text. Not centered correctly or wrapping differently.

Platform: Windows XP
I have Word 2002 as a part of Works 2002

Don't use Word for creating websites. It's not designed for it, and -- as
you've just demonstrated the hard way -- the results are unacceptable.

Web pages always use the fonts available on the target machine, whatever
they may be. You have to consider that when you design the page.

I downloaded Macromedia's Dreamweaver 4.0 (30- day trial). I tried
re-creating one of the pages and still got the tiling effect eventhough I
chose no-repeat in background features.

I want to use a file from Photoshop for a background image.
I want it to fill the frame regardless of target machine. No repeat. No
tiliing.
Should I insert it as a pciture - or select it as a background?

Any ideas?

Hi Jan,

It's normal for background graphics to be either fixed
size or to tile.

Part of the problem there is that if you use a small
picture to keep page load time down, it won't look good
when scaled larger (i.e. it's like looking at a printed
picture with high powered magnification - using the
Windows Magnifier tool at different settings will give
you an idea (Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>Accessibility)

If you use a large graphic (so that
it looks good at 1028 or larger resolution, full screen
on a 21 inch monitor, it's going to be a large download
for every page visitor.

You can use Cascading Style sheets to size the graphic
by percentage in a browser Window or to set it to stationery
so that the text when 'scrolled' 'floats' over the graphic

You can put a background on a table that resizes.

Bob,

Thanks for your reply. I am currently doing just what you
recommend...creating a CSS file to attach to the site's HTML file. I checked
out bothlinks you sent. They are very helpful, also.
Thanks so much.
