How can I determine whether a product is a full commercial, academic or NFR
version?

The box it's in is a pretty good clue. If you mean after install then
Help About and the EULA should give you the answer.

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. I was curious if you could tell by the Product ID
number or by some other number unique to the product. If I was intending on
buying some software second hand would there be a way to tell what version it
was by some other unique identifier?

That would depend entirely on the info available and the "product"
involved. If you have a product number, punch it into www.google.com and
see what comes up.
