Help with 'insufficient memory' error?

Harold Gunn

I'm getting these error messages when I try to copy and paste pictures
from any source into a Word document. The problem is consistent, so my
project is stopped. I have Office 2000 and XP Pro. Both are fully
updated. I have plenty of memory, cpu speed and HD space. I've done
several much larger documents with pictures on this computer without
problems. When these errors began, I tried the Word repair tool, but it
had no effect.

Someone at an XP newsgroup told me that this is a fairly common
corruption problem that can be fixed by deleting normal.dot, then
restarting Word. Was that good advice? If so, how do I access the file
to delete it? I wasn't able to find it with Windows search.

I'll be grateful for some help. Thanks..

Since renaming normal.dot is fairly painless (although you do lose
your customizations), it's definitely something to try. If Ctrl-F in
Windows Explorer didn't find anything, the folder may be hidden. In
Windows Explorer, go to Tools menu - Folder Options. On the View tab,
select the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button. You might
want to also uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files
(Recommended)" option. (And while you're here, might as well make sure
don't have the "Hide virus files" option turned on. Oops, sorry, they
call it the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.)

Once you have hidden files showing, do a search for normal.dot again.
Instead of deleting it, rename it to something obvious, like
Oldnormal.dot, or normal.old, or whatever. This way, if a new normal
template turns out not to fix the problem, you can get back your
customizations fairly easily.

I found normal.dot, renamed it and restarted Word. Word replaced the
file, but I'm still getting insufficient memory error messages.

Is there anything else I can try?
