Hhelpp!! File not available after MSOffice & Windows XP SP2 Update

Hhhelpppp!!!

I updated from Windows XP SP1 to SP2, and also updated MS Office XP to MS
Office 2003, and now when I try to open any MS Word, Excel etc docs I get an
error message that says " file xxxxxxx.doc not available". I deinstalled MS
Office 2003 and reinstalled MSOffice XP SP3, and the problem remains. I can
open the same files with Wordpad, and with Quickview Plus.

I updated my Symantec Antivirus definitions, and when that didn't work, used
MSConfig to disable all antivirus programs, then rebooted, but the problem
remained. I also ran LiveUpdate on my virus programs.

Just to be clear about this problem, if I create a new word document, save
it, and then try to open it immediately, I get the same error message. When I
had the problem on MSOffice 2003, it said something about the antivirus being
a problem, but I have explored that issue, and done everything suggested by
Symantec.

Thanks for the tip, but I already tried that. Problem is, I am running
Symantec Norton AV Corporate Edition 9.0.0.338, and they don't even talk
about a solution involving that version. I looked to see if there were
equivalent settings, and tried everything close, but nothing worked.

Any other ideas would be appreciated....sigh

I guess this is the state of software these days, no one tests their stuff
in any broad way. Not only that, but you have to work so hard to tell them
about a problem, it's kinda like a Customer Paying Company in order to get
the right to buy from them, and then paying for their product too, AND THEN
we have to pay for support.

If you have Norton Corporate Edition, then you're not a single user
because that is a volume-licensed product, and you should be able to get
help from your company's computer support people. You certainly haven't
paid me anything for trying to help you, so I'd really appreciate it if
you'd stop whining about paying for support. If you had an older
version of Norton Antivirus installed on the computer before you got
Norton Corporate Edition, then the Office Plugin from the older version
could still be registered in Windows even if you have uninstalled the
older version. Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard drive
(include system and hidden files/folders). If you find it, note the
folder where it is located, and use the "regsvr32 /u" method described
in KB329820 to unregister the DLL.

Nice to see you have empathy for my position. Thanks. FYI, My company
requires me to take their Corporate Edition of Norton AV on my personal PC in
order to be able to periodically connect my pc to their network, but my IT
dept won't help me fix the problem because my pc isn't one of theirs. Nice to
be in no-mans-land. I am where no IT Man Has gone before..or ever will. So
since I have been abandoned, I have to work this out myself.

FYI, we are all here helping each other to solve problems. In order to get
paid, you have to actually fix something. So far, you haven't earned
anything. On the other hand, I am not going to make the flippant kind of
remark you made. I'll just take the high road, thank you for your input so
far, and hope that someone else can lend a hand.

It has become abundantly clear why your company's IT department refuses
to work with you. I'm done with you too.
