horizontal line /format object

I have always been able to click the horizontal line in the A icon but now
the format object is in grey and i do not know how to turn it back on.

Also, my asterisks are turning into periods when sent to someone in a doc.
Dont know why all of a sudden as i have been sending asterisks in footnotes
for many months now.

I have been scanning books into OmniPage Pro 14, then converting it to Word
2003.
Could this be why the asterisks are turning into periods on the receiving
end for my client?
