Hotmail Download problem

Matthew Clark

I was told to post this here by someone in the MSN.Discussion group...

I have some students that are reporting, and I have seen, an error while
trying to download any office attachment while in Hotmail. The error
states, " Internet explorer cannot download ..... 64.4.56.250. Internet
Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is
either unavailable or cannot be found." I have seen other posts on this in
searching google, but have not found a valid solution. Does anyone have a
suggestion on how to fix this?

Yikes!! Using Hotmail for students??!!! All Internet based mail is strictly
banned by my agency as the petri dish for viruses that it is. It bypasses
all corporate gateways and firewalls, spreads directly to the network from
an infected computer, and is generally a horrible idea. (My agency uses
WebSense for blocking - quite effective, and the reporting tool is just the
wedge needed to pry someone who will not listen out of their position.)

Having gotten that off my chest, it is more than likely an attachment
(likely malware) that the mail is trying to download from a website that is
now unavailable. Or perhaps an image. Do you employ any blocking at your
institution? Are any IP blocks banned?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

Actually no. I don't think this is a firewall issue. I believe this is
a SP2 security enhancement. I have found at least 2 other people who
are having the same issue, not at my campus. We have no IP blocks.
This seems to only be Office documents, because I sent one student a JPG
and he could download it just fine, but if you send him a PPT, or DOC,
it gives the error.

Here are some other people having the same issue:

I just re-read this and it came across harshly I think, and I apologize.
I did not intend it that way. I don't think this is a firewall issue
because I believe no firewall, including XP's firewall is enabled
anyware. If anyone has a suggestion, I would be more than happy to try
it out.
