Hotmail not working with Ent. 2004?

J

Joel Nelson

I just upgraded from Entourage v.X to 2004. Hotmail worked fine in v.X.
In 2004 I always get an "unknown error" (-3210). Any ideas?

Is anyone else seeing this problem with MSN/Hotmail? This happens all the
time now, so it appears that Entourage 2004 simply isn't compatible with MSN
or Hotmail.

My hotmail account is working fine in Entourage 2004.

My hotmail account is working fine in Entourage 2004.
Mine won't. It's actually an @msn.com address; maybe that makes a
difference?

No, I have an msn.com account as well and it works. Are you sure there
aren't any proxy issues or network connectivity issues? You might want to
give support a call...

Which support number should I call? I don't think there are any
proxy/connectivity issues since it worked fine just 24 hours ago on
Entourage X. Mail.app (with HTTPMail Plugin) also can still check the
account without problems.

I think I found the answer here in Entourage Help:
Check your Hotmail account type
Hotmail no longer allows programs such as Entourage and Microsoft Outlook to
access mail stored in free Hotmail accounts. In order to use Entourage to
access your Hotmail account, you must sign up for a subscription such as MSN
Extra Storage or MSN Hotmail. For more information, visit http://www.msn.com.
Clicking this link will open your Web browser.

So it worked fine in Entourage v.X but now in 2004 I have to have a paid
Hotmail account to use Hotmail/MSN with Entourage.

J

Joel Nelson

Has anyone else had trouble with Hotmail and Entourage 2004? Can anyone
confirm that I do in fact need to get an Extra Storage account to use
Hotmail with Entourage 2004?

J

Joel Nelson

I called MSN again and they said that Hotmail/MSN is not compatible with
Entourage 2004. They do not know if it will be. Dave (and anyone else
who has made Hotmail work with Entourage 2004) can you let me know how you
did it?

Joel

J

Joel Nelson

I tried it on another computer with Entourage 2004 and had the same results,
the error (-3210). Maybe it has to do with the account type.

J

Joel Nelson

I got a couple family members to try their MSN addresses (a MSN Premium and
a free account) with Entourage 2004 and the same thing happened -- error
(-3210). If it works for you then maybe it has something to do with my
network settings (firewall, etc.). My only firewall is in my DSL modem
and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot that.

Joel

This doesn't help you any, but FWIW, my hotmail still works fine with
Entourage 2004.

I just received a letter from Hotmail Staff reminding me I could upgrade my
account to have more than a 2 meg limit on my email, and also a CoolSavings
newsletter (something I subscribe to).

This is with the basic free hotmail account.

J

Joel Nelson

I don't know why my account isn't working. It's a "former" MSN account
that is now a free Hotmail account (@msn.com). No extra storage or
anything... just a basic account.

J

Joel Nelson

I can't believe it was this simple, but the problem is that the account must
be named "Hotmail" in the Entourage account list. It wouldn't accept the
account with the "MSN Mail" that I had entered. After renaming the account
to "Hotmail", following a tip from microsoft.public.mac.office, it worked
properly.

I'm not doubting the account is working for you, but it seems quite unlikely
that the display name you choose has anything to do with it. I have 4
separate hotmail accounts configured and working, and none of them are named
"Hotmail"

You're right...it worked ONCE after renaming it to Hotmail and has gone back
to the same error (-3210). So much for thinking it was that simple.

It seems that every now and then Hotmail accounts quit working, and then all
of a sudden there they are again, as if nothing happened. How long has this
been going on? I seem to recall having a problem with Hotmail through
Outlook Express and Entourage X in the past. Sometimes it would go a couple
days without grabbing the email. Then I would just give up on it. Days later
I would try it again, and there it was, working.

I have never trusted Hotmail enough to use as my main email. I use it when I
have to give up an email address on a web site to get something I want, and
I don't want my main email address added to a SPAM list.

It's been going on since Tuesday. I only was able to check the account
immediately after renaming the account to "Hotmail". I've had 30+ errors
and eventually just removed the account from my Send/Receive schedule. I
still click on the account to try to check and see if it's working but it's
always "error -3210".
