Hotmail not working with Ent. 2004?

W

Walter R Basil

It's been going on since Tuesday. I only was able to check the account
immediately after renaming the account to "Hotmail". I've had 30+ errors
and eventually just removed the account from my Send/Receive schedule. I
still click on the account to try to check and see if it's working but it's
always "error -3210".

Have you tried deleting your Hotmail account from Entourage altogether?
Delete it, Close Entourage, Open Entourage, and set up a new Hotmail account
using your same email and password. I think that worked for one time.

That doesn't help either.

Someone suggested that it might be a cookie problem. I don't see where to
set cookies in Entourage. Safari's cookies are set to Accept All.

I just upgraded from Entourage v.X to 2004. Hotmail worked fine in v.X.
In 2004 I always get an "unknown error" (-3210). Any ideas?

Joel,

Hotmail is working superbly for me in Entourage 2004. I have it set up to
retrieve email from four separate accounts. And none of these are the
"premium" accounts; they're the free ones.

This is just a shot in the dark, but you might try the following:

When the support person told you about naming the MSN account as "Hotmail,"
perhaps what he meant is that Entourage Hotmail accounts are for the
Hotmail.com domain, not MSN.com. If that's the case, you might try creating
your MSB account in Entourage as a NORMAL account rather than a Hotmail one.

When I set the MSN account up as POP3 I get an authentication error --
Entourage 2004 does not support the required authentication. (Mozilla
correctly accesses this MSN account via POP3.) Microsoft says Entourage
2004 is supposed to open both MSN and Hotmail accounts.

Right, but it only works when you create a Hotmail/MSN account. Entourage
does not support connecting to Hotmail/MSN via POP3.

That is where the problem is. I have a free Hotmail account (@msn.com
because it's left over from when I was a MSN subscriber a number of years
ago) and Entourage won't access it even through its built in Hotmail/MSN
account support.

Joel,

You can not set or control the cookies handling in Entourage for Hotmail/MSN
accounts. Also Safari's cookie settings will not affect Entourage's ability
to receive cookies from the Hotmail service.

I have investigated you problem with a few different free MSN accounts and I
haven't experienced the 3210 error you describe. Can you tell me what
application(s) did you use to retrieve your MSN mail before attempting to do
so with Entourage 2004? Are you're able to sign in and retrieve your mail
through the hotmail.com website?

Thanks,

Joel,

A few more question about your account. Can you tell me if you have any
personal folders set up for your MSN account, how many and what interface
did you use to create them (MSN client, Hotmail.com, or Entourage X?)

Thanks,

I can sign in and retrieve mail through Hotmail.com. I used Apple Mail
(w/HTTPMail Plugin) and Entourage v.X before Entourage 2004. The only
folders in the account are the ones created by MSN; I have not set up any
personal folders. The folders are Inbox, Sent, Deleted Items, and Junk
E-Mail. Entourage 2004 can¹t even get as far as to download the folders.
It only takes 1-2 seconds from when I click on the account to when the error
comes up. The error occurs on both DSL and dial-up connection. It occurs
on multiple computers and multiple Entourage profiles. It also occurs with
other @msn.com and @hotmail.com accounts. I have been in contact with a
Microsoft support agent and it has him stumped also. I¹ve reinstalled
Office 2004 3 times. This is the Student and Teacher Edition.

I isolated the problem to an apparent software conflict. On a partition
that has just a basic OS 10.3 installation Hotmail and Entourage work right.
On my main boot partition and my other two computers, Entourage 2004 and
Hotmail don¹t work together; the error 3210 occurs. Any ideas on what
programs could be a problem? I have already tried turning off Norton
AntiVirus, all Unsanity products, and ensuring the OS X firewall is off, but
nothing has helped. I¹d rather not reformat unless necessary.

Joel,

I am having the exact same problems as you are. I contacted Microsoft
support. They responded with a list of seven things to try, none of which
worked. I aslo tried renaming my account as Hotmail instead of my name,
as already mentinoned, it worked once and not again. I also have the
Student/teacher edition. I did read earlier that there might be a conflict with
Content Barrier from Intego. Otherwise, I'm with you, there seems to be a
definate problem somewhere and many people seem to be experienceing it.
It would be nice to know what is similar in all the situations, perhaps that
would provide a clue.
