I have 200 plus pictures from my Mom's 80th birthday party...how can I add
sound (music etc) to the files so that when they play back the pictures do a
slideshow and the music plays in the background?

Not necessarily an Office related question, or answer, but if you have
Windows XP then use Windows Movie Maker. I believe it comes with
Windows XP SP-2. Should you have any additional questions about Movie
Maker then here's a link to the newsgroup:

In addition to Beth's suggestion to use Windows Movie Maker, I'll say you
can also use Photo Story for this.

Assuming you're asking about PowerPoint, though, see Play sounds across
multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00047.htm However, know that the words
PowerPoint and synchronization shouldn't be used in the same sentence
together, so if you need to synch the pix and music, then don't use PPT.

Photo Story is pretty cool too. Both Movie Maker and Photo Story have
features the other doesn't. For example in Photo Story you can control
the motion manually, such as setting Start and End position, and
record narration for each image. Movie Maker has cool transitions and
allows you add text to the images. Photo Story is great for quick
projects too. Just import the images, add your background music, and
it can do the rest.

I've used both together, actually. I'll use Photo Story for the images
I want use various pans and zooms on, I create several small files,
and then import them into Movie Maker and use it for the final movie.

The biggest advantage for both is they'll create a *.wmv file so you
don't need a specific application for playback.
