How can I disable read only file opening in word 2003?

I have a user who's PC was upgraded from Winnt 4.0 / Office 97 to Win XP Pro
/ Office 2003. Ocassionally, when she opens a Word document, the document
opens in "READ ONLY" mode even though it was never initially saved with that
feature enabled.

It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does she's required to save the
document under another file name and then go back through Windows Explorer
and rename the file. It's very frustrating, and is happening quite regularly.

Any suggestions how I can resolve this behaviour? Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Graham... thanks for the input.

I've looked over the link you sent me, but it doesn't seem to address my
specific problem. Any further insight you can provide for the read only issue?

Thanks in advance.

The other reference on the subject, written by fellow MVP Terry Farrell -
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/LockedFiles.htm indicates the same
cause. There is another possibility. Were these files copied from CD? That
would set the read-only attribute.
If the read only atribute is set it can be unset in Explorer before the
document is opened, but my money is still on orphan temp files caused by not
shutting Word correctly. Does your user switch off the PC without closing
Windows?
