How can I insert text into a picture of a screen snapshot?

In preparing a process document in Word 2003, I have a picture of a screen
snapshot. I need to label the items on the screen snapshot A), B), C), etc.
Text boxes are a possibility but hard to line up with the existing text.
Any other suggestions?

The "correct" way would be to insert a Drawing (Canvas) into the document.
Insert the picture into that, then add the text boxes (or call-outs). If you
have trouble aligning them because they're jumping to a grid, hold down ALT as
you drag or turn off "Snap to Grid" in Draw/Grid (Drawing toolbar)

The only other possibility is to use Word's Picture Editor, but that would still
involve textboxes.

there are a few ways...here's two...go to INSERT > REFERENCE>CAPTION is one
way (you can even change the caption heading).
Another way is to insert a text box (take the line off) and group both
objects by right mouse clicking and GROUPING.
