How can I open an MS Project 2007 file in MS Project 2003?

I just received a file from a contractor, but when I tried to open it an
error message came up saying that it was created in Project 2007, and that I
had to download a converter. So I clicked "OK", and was directed to a
Project 2007 site that said such a converter did not exist.

I saw another post where someone said that they were saving their 2007 files
in a 2003 format, but when they sent the supposed 2003 format file out, the
individuals receiving those files experienced the same thing I did.

This type of hassle seems to occur every time a new version of Project
appears.

Anybody have a solution or a workaround?

Hi,

If they saved the file from a Beta version of Project, then you have a
problem because the converter is likely to only work with RTM code. No
'live' work should ever be done with Beta versions as file formats change
regularly. Get the contractor to try saving to .mpd and .xml formats and see
if you can open from either of them.

Hi Gabriel ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

This is a Beta version and you are warned that you shouldn't use it for
production products. My guess is that the final version will be fully
compatible.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Thanks, Rod. I will ask the contractor to save in the alternate formats.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. I will pass it on to the contractor. Unfortunately, I
don't have the option of wating for the final version.

Thanks again,

Gabriel

Actually you're doing the right thing by waiting. It's the contractor who
jumped the gun and is using the test version of the software to do actual
work (instead of just experimenting with real data for test purposes) even
though Microsoft tells folks over and over again NOT to do that. Beta and
evaluation versions of software are only for testing and for one to play
with a bit to help decide if buying the product is right for them and should
never, EVER, be used for actual productive work where it would matter if you
lost the whole thing.
