How can I stop column width auto extending

I am novice at frontpage or even webdesign. I have started with layout
table - not convinced it is any better than nested tables. Anyway, I have
inserted tables within these and would like cells that stay width fixed and
height auto extending. Whatever I do the width changes as I reach the end of
the column while typing. How can i stop it doing this.

You can't. Tables/cells width values are only minimums and will expand based on any non-wrapable
content inserted.
