My old computer died. When I tried to load my office xp software on a new
computer, I got a message saying that it was registered to another computer
(ie: my old one) andwouldn't let me register. What should I do.

OEM editions of MS Office (those intended for sale with/installed
on a new PC) are licensed to the machine rather than a person.

If your computer is a warranty replacement contact the PC supplier
for another Office copy.

I bought the Office XP software independently of the computer, at the local
Best Buy, so the prohibition against transferring came-with-the-computer
software shouldn't apply, right?

If it's a retail edition you should be able to use
the telephone activation method to speak to a MS
Activation technican to transfer the software.
