how do i activate spellcheck?

You didn't specify, but Word 2003's Help returned this:
Set general preferences for how Word checks spelling and grammar

1.. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling &
Grammar tab.
2.. Under Spelling or Grammar, select the options that you want.
