How do I add line numbers to endnote or footnoted materials?

Hello, in the process of submitting a manuscript to a journal that requires
me to insert line numbers for all sections of the paper including the
references which were done using footnotes. Per the default, Word doesn't
add line numbers to endnotes. I guess I would like to know a way around this
or a way to turn off the default so that I can keep the hyperlink which
connects the reference and the citation. Thanks.

You can add fake line numbers by typing numbers in a text box or frame
anchored to the header paragraph, which would make them repeat on all pages.
Note that you would also have to use a fixed value for line spacing, to make
your line numbers and the actual text lines line up.

I don't understand what "keep the hyperlink" means... Under which
circumstances do your hyperlinks disappear?

Thanks, the only other way I could figure out to do it was to copy the
endnotes then paste them in the manuscript above the endnote line, then
delete the endnotes themselves, which would result in a loss of the hyperlink
between the endnote and the citation and you would get a bookmark error
message. Your idea is so much easier.

Hi,
How do you make the text box or frame box anchor to the header paragraph? I
created some text boxes but was only able to get it to work and line up on
the first page and I couldn't get the text box to carry over to the next
page. I tried pasting in a new text box and moving it to the next endnote
page but that wouldnt' work. Any suggestions?
