How do I add text in just the column added?

I am working w/project 2003. I inserted a new column and want to enter text
data in the new column. Entered data replaces data in the column to the left.

First of all what field did you insert as a new column? You can only
enter text into text based fields. Make sure the selected field cell is
active when you enter the data. My guess is you have the field cell to
the left activated.
