How do I automatically attach extensions to MS office documents

A

Adding Extensions

In MS office, my computer does not automatically assign extensions such as
doc or xls or ppt to documents when I rename them on the desktop. I went into
tools/options/save and the extension save appears to be indicated. What do I
need to do so if I rename a document on the desktop, the extension will
automatically be generated without me typing in .doc or .ppt, etc?

Most extensions are usually hidden unless you have chosen to show the
extensions for known file types. If the extensions are hidden then you do
not need to append the extension when renaming and if the extensions are
visible select just the text in front of the extension when renaming.

To add to what Paul said, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools=>Folder
Options=>File Types and uncheck the box that says "hide extensions for known
file types"
