I have a linked excel object in a powerpoint slide. Is there any way of
converting it into an embedded object other than deleting it and starting
again?

Julie,

Try either

Select the spreadsheet on powerpoint

Edit menu > Links > Break Link

Or

Edit menu > linked worksheet object > convert > to ms excel

Or
select it....edit > cut > paste special > then choose another option
