How do I ... create labels with database-driven images

I want to create a set of labels where each label has a different
image, selected on the basis of a database field.

That is, each label would have a name from the database and a picture
associated with that name.

I've tried putting the images into cells in Excel, and using the Excel
worksheet as the database for an MSWord-created set of labels, but
they're not imported to the final product as the corresponding text is.

Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.
