How do I deactivate MS Word (2003) intelligence?

I have created templates to be used by other users. My problem is that the
moment you use one of these templates for an existing document the template
absorbs the formats of the said document. The result is that you have (for
example) more than one Heading 1 - but with different formats!

The whole purpose of these templates are that all similiar documents, should
look the same, but now Word changes all that.

Please can anyone help me?
Thanks

How are you "using" a template for an "existing document"? You can attach
the template to the document with "Automatically update document styles"
checked, but a better way to get all the template features is to create a
new document based on the template and use Insert | File to insert the
existing document. The Heading 1s should not be formatted differently unless
direct formatting has been applied to the paragraphs in the existing
document.
