How do I delete a word or phrase?

Selecting and hitting the delete key doesn't work. The text remains selected
and nothing at all happens.
There are 3 ways I can delete, but none is convenient: 1. position cursor
at end of word (or phrase) and back up one letter at a time. 2. select and
use edit/cut. 3. select and use edit/ctrl x.

Have you tried double-clicking the word/phrase you wish to highlight the
entire piece then hitting the Delete key?

Tools > options > edit > check 'typing replaces selection'
