How do I delete an extra line return?

I am proofreading a document and am unable to delete an extra line return
which seems to be embedded in the formatting. This extra line return occurs
at irregular intervals, several times on each page. When I highlight the
extra space and try to delete it, nothing happens. Please help!

It might be a good idea to tell us what version of Word (Assuming it is
Word you are using) you are using.

You might try displaying paragraph marks via the "View" menu You may try
various views to see what might be causing the lines. There should be
something there.

Thank you, Joseph --

I am using Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002. When I look at
the "View" menu I find nothing for displaying paragraph marks. In "Format"
menu I can go to "Paragraph" and set it at Multiple 0.5, which obviously
makes the spacing less on that particular line but not fix the formatting
problem.

Sorry to be so dense about this, but clearly I am totally puzzled. I have
proofread/redlined many documents but have never run into this before.

Thanks for your help.

That was the answer! I didn't realize I had that box checked. Thanks so much!

That exact same issue came up with one of my bosses last week. He was going
nuts (short trip for him).
