Hi Alon,
There is a fabulous chess diagram program called Chess Captor that lets you
draw any type of chess diagram and manipulate it in many ways. It's
available for download for about $25 and works very well. It creates
drawings in jif or jpeg images, I'm not sure which.
As Suzanne mentioned, you can also download some very nice chess fonts.
Google chess fonts and you'll find them. A chess font allows you to display
particular chess pieces with the touch of a key (k = white king on white
square, for instance). Chess Merida is a nice chess font, by A. Marroquin.
Once you have a chess font installed, then you could create an 8 x 8 table,
shade the squares alternately, and insert chess pieces using your chess font.
That would result in a chess diagram in a table, rather than a graphic
image.
