How do I find an Excel spreadsheet opened as attachment in Outlook

Irv K.

Using Outlook 2000...I received an e-mail with an Excel spreadsheet as an
attachment. I opened it and spent a great deal of time adding information
before I closed it. I thought I had saved it. When I went back into Excel and
tried to call up the file via the list of most recent files accessed, it said
the file could not be found. I have spent a great deal of time searching for
the file with no success. I did read that Outlook attachments are saved in
the Temporary Internet Files when opened but I have not been able to get to
it by looking in that area. How do I locate the file and will the information
I added be incorporated in it? If I can't access the information there, is
there another way to recover the data I entered in Excel? Any assistance
would be appreciated greatly.

Try searching your computer for any *.xls file that contains a term that you
know you've added to that document. Preferable something "unique".

Yo should never open an attachment directly from an e-mail - save it to disk
and work on the saved copy.

Your work probably was saved in a subfolder under Temporary Internet Files
and is probably gone for good, I'm afraid - if you can't find it and Excel
can't find it, it tends to suggest it's not there.

In the address bar of Windows Explorer, type %temp% , find any .tmp file that may
relate to Excel. Rename it from .tmp to .xls. Did you delete the email? The
attachment is still there if you haven't deleted the message. You may have to start
all over again.

I'm not sure about Office 2000 but Office 2003 uses a folder in Temporary
Internet Folders (called OLK...) and not the normal Temp folder for
attachments.
