There is a period at the bottom of my cursor which does not show up on a page

Chances are if you check out the Tools > Options > View > Formatting
marks dialog, you have either show All formatting marks or at least
spaces set. When this is set, a space is represented formally by a
small period in the middle of the space character. This makes it easy
to spot double spacing etc problems.

Either that or the cursor has dwindled to a single point, as has been so
often reported lately. Changing the zoom to 500% and back seems to fix that.
