How do I get the slides to advance on my computer?

When I pull up the powerpoint program on my computer it shows the first
slides and then I can't advance to the next slide.

I'm assuming that you are in Normal view and want to edit the presentation,
right? Depending on your version of PowerPoint there can be additional ways but
in all versions Page Down works and you can also use the scroll bar.
