how do i insert boxes in text (to check off later when printed)?

How do I insert boxes in the text of a document so that when printed, the
user can check them off

If the boxes are to be printed and checked by hand then simply insert a
square box symbol from (say) the Wingdings font
If the boxes are to be checked in Word, then see the relevant section of
