How do I make my folder list show new emails in sub-categories?

I have many sub-folder in my emails. How can I make it so I can see if any
new emails come in without having my complete list open?

I don't think OL2003 expands folders with unread items under them. You can
use the Unread Messages search folders to find messages anywhere in the
message store that are unread.
