How do I multi layer a slide in PP.

I am wanting to start with a part of a diagram and then have the next slide
fly in on the original slide with the next stage of the diagram etc.

I believe I understand what you are looking to accomplish, but if not - post
with more details.

Assuming the diagram is being created with PPT autoshapes, I would first
build all of the pieces of the entire diagram in their place on one slide.
As it is being built, group the elements for each stage of the diagram. So
if there are 5 stages to the diagram, there will be 5 groupings of shapes
and text on the slide. Duplicate the slide 4Xs. On the first slide, delete
all but the stage 1 group. On the second slide, delete all but the stage 1
and 2 groups. Continue deleting through slide 5. Now apply a slide
transition to each (FADE if using PPT 2002/2003, DISSOLVE if using PPT 97 or
2000). Done.
