How do I open a works document in word?

I received a works file which I converted to word after installing the works
filter but when I open it all I get are 'heiroglyphics'. I am using office
2000 with windows xp, I don't know which version of works the file is in.

Get the sender to "Save As" a Word document in Works and resend.
