How do I overlap picture images in Word?

graphics headaches

I am using Office XP standard version. I need to insert pictures of digital
images onto a page where I can overlap or layer one image on top of another
without all the white space from a boundary box. I have one large image and
want to place several smaller images onto the larger image without the white
space showing through.

As far as I know, Word can only do this with GIF graphics, that have a
"transparent" color set in the graphic, before it's imported into Word.

Otherwise, the best choice would probably be to make the graphic composite in a
graphics program that supports the functionality you require. Save this as a
graphics file and import it into Word as a single graphic. (Note that this
would also speed page layout and display of the document).
