How do I password protect a subweb and allow users to set up passw

T

twodharma

I want to allow users to click a link and then be taken to a page where they
either enter their existing user name and password, or register a new user
name and password.
Once this is registered, I want them to be able to access a secure site that
I've set up.

Also, where will user names and passwords be stored so that I can manage
them, delete them, reset, etc.

I am using Frontpage 2003. My web provider is running Unix servers.
Thanks in advance.

Unix only support self registration (anyone can register) if your host support subwebs w/ unique permissions
Password protection ( a subweb) and secure sites (https) are 2 different things
To create a password protected subweb
See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825451
Your host will have to support subwebs and unique permissions under the FP Server Extensions
Then create a self registration page (from the new page templates) in your root web online and link it to the subweb per the
instructions on the page
- you can not manage users (other than delete them), FP does

Anything more sophisticated or for https you need a Db (probably mySql) and server side coding (PHP on unix)

Hi,

I'm also trying the same thing. I have set up a subweb and put my user reg.
on the root directory. I have set the subweb to unique user. I still get a
frontpage error. I think I may be setting up something in form properties
incorrectly.

Post a URL or the published site
Are you on a Unix site and does the host support subwebs and unique permissions under the FP Server Extensions

I received info stating this could be done. I was told to go to Front page -
File - and the Open Web. but I have not found an OPEN WEb. Why not? After
that you are supposed to type in your http under folder name and then right
click on the directory i wish to password protect and select Convert to Web.
Rt click on the newly created Web and select OPEN. Click and select the top
level directory (Usually the Web name). Click Tools - Security -
Permissions. Click Use unique permissions for this web and click apply. Next
click user tab and select Only registered users have browse access, click on
apply then click add. Enter the username and password you wish to assign to
this directory into the respective fields. Select Browse the Web and then
click OK> To add additional users, just click add and then repeat. I hope
this works for you because I never found the OPEN WEB at the very beginning.

My pop up said "The folder is not accessible. The folder may be located in
an unabailable location, protected with a password, or the filename conains a
/ or \."
I put in the password before this. When I am transferring info to website
from frontpage, I use the ftp not the http address. Does this have something
to do with it? Also all my pages are not in a certain folder they are just
under "my website" folder on my computer and on my site on the internet.
Should I have them in folders? Will that help?

You can not use the FP SE features in FTP mode and if your host does not have the FP SE

Did you finish your sentence? I really don't understand what you are trying
to tell me. Could you be a little clearer. I am not a programmer, just a
stupid Grandma trying to figure this out. Please be patient with me. Thanks
