Humor:
Hold the CD over an open flame?

Serious:

in the blanks...

What Bill said.... but also

have you tried running windows in "Safe mode"... if that works, then it
generally points to "your graphics card drivers need updating"

Hmmm. Open flame. Hmmmm. Gives me pause for thought. I spent literally 6
hours on the phone with Technical "Support" yesterday. The questionable word
here is "support" since the "solution" didn't work and created work instead.
Still don't have everything corrected.

Nonetheless, you ask good questions. See my answers below.

Yes, now that you mention it, that was another fix we tried but it, too, made
no difference although your idea has always struck me as a potential answer
since as I enter data and the program freezes, it strikes me as a
possibility. The only problem is that it only happens in PPT and it doesn't
have anything to do with a graphic-heavy presentation - I'm just talking here
about a one slide presentation and entering letters on the one slide, no
graphics at all.

thanks.

Bosco,
Do you (by chance), use either Norton for your anti-virus program? If so,
try turning off the Office Plug-in that comes with it.

Note: If you use Norton System Works or the corporate version of Norton, you
may need to turn off the plug-in more than once to get it to stick.

I had a problem with PPT animation audio being broken and not understandable
after years of normal use. The audio worked fine in other programs. After
much work I finally upgraded my Soundblaster driver online and that cured
the problem. It must have been caused by one of the Windows upgrades
causing the audio driver to malfunction only in certain areas/programs. You
may have a similar problem causing the freeze. Check for video and audio
driver updates for your computer systems.

Thanks, Darrell. I'll check for updates.

This may sound a little off the wall, but try to disable spell checking.
Tools => Options => Spelling and style => Spell check as you type => Uncheck

The main difference between your system and most others is that you are
running a stand alone version of PowerPoint without any other Office apps.
So that raises the question, what is calling on the missing Office
infrastructure for assistance? It may be something simple like spell
checking.

Please post back, this sounds interesting (I know interesting isn't the word
you would have chosen)

Bill,
Now you are on to the kind of issue I suspected but had nothing solid to go
on. What i've done is just to purchase the Office 2003 Upgrade and i'll be
doing a presentation this weekend on it. I'll let you know if the problem
persists.
