How do I prevent slide 1 from using the master?

How do I keep the master slide from being used by the first slide? This is a
cover page or slide that needs to be left unchanged.

Two Steps:

Click on Format, Slide Layout and choose the blank layout. Your
placeholders will convert to text boxes and no longer be effected by changes
on the SlideMaster.

Click on Format, Background and check the box to Omit Background Graphics
from Master.
