How do I reduce hidden margin around an inserted photo?

I have inserted various photos into a word document. The header then
automatically increases to up to 3 inches (even though the page layout is 1
inch and there are no returns/paragraphs marks in the header-even when
displayed). It appears as if there is a hidden margin around the photos
causing it to take up more room than than actual photo. I have tried all
reveal tools and nothing shows up.

Did you look at the Advanced Layout properties ("Distance from text")?
Format | Picture | Layout | Advanced.
