I have my area code typed in the control panel's area code rules, but I still
have the area code dialing when I connect fax to MS Outlook

Why do you believe you need to remove the area code?

My local faxes will not go through with the area code included.

As far as I'm aware, all telephone company switching systems know how to
handle area codes on all phone numbers, including local area codes.

Brian,

In Jacksonville, FL, dialing the area code 904 comes up with a recording
saying this call cannot go through. Dialing 1 904 says I do not need the 1.
I need to be able to remove the 904.

thank you.

Then you'll have to misconfigure your WIndows modem and dialing properties
(since Outlook uses that information to format the numbers) and modify your
contacts, either manually, or with a third-party app, to remove the area
code.

How do I misconfigure the fax/modem dialing properties? I have tried to
force the 904 out of the phone number before importing the phone # into
Outlook, but it brings it back automatically. I have looked at the dialing
properties, but do not see anywhere to misconfigure the dialing properties.
Is there somewhere you can have me find instructions to do that? Thank you.

Brian, thank you for your efforts. I finally found a way around this. If I
put quotation marks around the phone number (local), then Outlook will leave
it alone, and the call will go through. I hope this helps others!

Wouldn't configuring the correct dialing rule take care of this? I've never
found it necessary to remove the area code for US numbers.

That's what I'd think.

Russ and Brian,

I called the phone company directly and read your statement to them about
the phone company's switching station being able to handle the area code.
They stated this is not correct in this area. I am sure that we are not the
only area code in the US with this setup with the telephone company. So I
did my research in all aspects of this project, made my changes and it now
allows the faxes to go through

Your local phone company is an anomaly, then.
