How do I remove complex scripts that have appeared in MS Office 20

A

AlineP

A Complex Scripts tab has spontaneously appeared in the Options dialog box in
MS Office 2003. Added to this I have extra font options made available in the
Font dialog boxes as well as what appears as arabic text in the MS Word Style
list. My regional language settings are English (U.K.) as is the language in
the Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings. Arabic/right to left languages
etc are not enabled anywhere in Office or Windows XP.
The problem followed what I think was a Word file having crashed and
attempted recovery. (Part of this crashed Word file may have been written by
a user on another computer who may have used Arabic text - although never in
this document that crashed).
I have seen this issue posted on another forum dated Nov2003, but no answer
was found for the individual at that time. Has anyone else experienced this
and been able to rectify it by disabling complex scripts?

Hi Aline,

In Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office tools see if
languages other than English are listed under the
Language Settings Tool.

Many thanks for your suggestion Bob.

Have checked this to confirm that I removed all languages other than English
(UK). I also tried with loading English (US) to see if that got around the
problem - but no luck.

I also double-checked Window XP Regional Language settings, and have just
English UK and English US loaded - the option for right-to-left languages is
not checked.

Still puzzled??? Thanks again.

Hi Aline,

Be sure that Word is not running when you make the
changes in the Language Setting Tools by checking
the Task Manager (can be a bit iffy if you're using
the 'Microsoft Office' Shortcut in Start=>Programs->Startup

Sometimes, if you add an RTL language, Chinese or Hebrew
then close the tool, then use it again and remove that
language it will make the change.

If that does not work try running the setting tool while
Word is running. It should ask you if you want to have it
close Office apps. Choose yes and when Word restarts see
if the Complex Scripts Tab (and in File=>Page Setup the Grid
button) are gone. If so, you may find that the Setting tool
has renamed Normal.dot to Normal.dot.old and created a new,
generic Normal.dot template and that your customizations are
gone.
