How do I reuse a project?

I am trying to assist somebody beginning a project who wants to use an old
project as a basis. He already went through the plan and manually adjusted
dates. However, he didn't clear % complete first. Now when I try to do it,
the dates jump all over the place. Many don't make sense to me based on the
constraints and dependencies.

My question is, is there a way to reset the % completes all to 0 without
having Project recalculate dates?

Hi,

First of all, there is absolutely no reason the calculated dates wouldn't
make sense: I'm convinced they do.
The answer to your question is: clear the prredecessors column; that should
do it.

Hi AJ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

First, click the Select All button - the button to the left of the Task
heading and above the ID number column - and all the tasks should be
highlighted. Now go to Project/Task Information.../General tab, enter 0% in
the Percent complete field and OK. This should reset all tasks to 0%.
Whilst all tasks are selected, go again to Task Information.../Advanced tab
and in the Constraint type field, use the drop-down arrow to select the As
Soon As Possible constraint and OK. This is not really a constraint but a
removal of constraints, and Project will calculate the start dates from the
Duration and Precedence linking, or from the Project Start date. Note that
you should not type Start or Finish dates as this will cause Project to
constrain the tasks to those dates, losing all flexibility. Let Project do
what it's designed to do - calculate dates and produce a schedule.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

l agree there's no reason the dates wouldn't make sense. However, I can't
find any reason why they should be behaving the way they are. I'm not saying
that the program isn't working correctly. I'm just not finding the cause.

I already tried clearing the predecessors. However, several dates in the
plan are calculated by them, and my clearing them the plan dates change.
Unfortunately, he went through and established his timeline before clearing
the percentage column. What I'm hoping do now find is a way to set all tasks
at % complete without affecting any dates to avoid making him redo all that
work.
