How do I separate columns from title?

I am trying to make a document with a title and subtitle,then setting columns
beneath them. Everytime I try this the title shoots down into the first
column. I have never been able to do this.

Columns are a section property, so you have to insert a section break
between single-column and multi-column text. You can do this manually
(Insert | Break | Section Break: Continuous) or let Word handle it for you
by selecting just the text you want in multiple columns when selecting the
number of columns (or choosing "This point forward") in the Format | Columns
dialog.
