I do not seem to understand something here with your replies. I believe that Outlook is part of the Office setup. Yet when it comes to Outlook (OL) in this newsgroup that is amply named Office.misc you send people to the Outlook group.

Yet when it involves Excel or Word which is also part of the Office group you tend to answer their issues. Why do you not send them also to the Excel group or the Word group like you do the latter.

People do post here from the CDO interface(big crap that interface) properly because this group is listed under the Office groups to which OL belongs.
To me this is a double standard and if you do that then send all posters that post in here to their appropriate Office groups that they pose questions under.

Sorry but this is only my opinion and I feel that I am right. I am defending or attacking anybody but I am simply pointing out a fact IMHO

Not knowing his motivations, but perhaps he has no expertise beyond the
basics for Outlook so he refers people to the Outlook news groups where the
true power users hang out? It is just my opinion of his referrals - perhaps
he is more adept at Word and Excel and can provide some assistance but is
completely asea when it comes to Outlook?

At any rate, a proper referral to the precise news group to answer questions
is always in good taste, but I understand your concern that only Outlook
users are directed to an Outlook specific news group (or I should say mostly
to avoid the flamethrower.)

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

Again this is only my opinion alone. I just find it a bit bad when someone purchases or has the Office suite installed and then runs into or has an issue with one app inside that suite and posts a question to this or any office group and gets an answer in layman's terms to go somewhere else. If it was me posting I would get upset or discouraged at best.

Carey,
'Hi
Peter is right. If you do not know the answer then just keep quiet.
Eventually some other people will read his post and they might know the
answer. If you can help then please do, otherwise....

The correct response is to guide a person to the appropriate newsgroup.

Hi Carey

If that is what you say then this newsgroup office misc should not be here. OL is part of office and you yourself do answer on Word,Excel issues that are posted. Maybe then everybody here should be directed to the proper group as you mention. Next time send people with Word and Excel to the proper group which do exist.

What I am trying to say that since this group is listed as Office then all inquiries should be answered that concerns it. If it does not concern Office then by all means I would be the first one to direct the OP to the proper group.

Granted that there exists a few group strictly for OL and Word and Excel etc this group is for general Office questions that involves all Office apps

FYI, the OP reposted to the Outlook newsgroup I referenced
and the issue has been resolved in short order.

At least the OP got an answer quickly Carey. But I think you missed the point of what I believe in and what I said

Anyway I vented my opinion. Thanks Carey

If I'm not mistaken this newsgroup was created for questions regarding
more than one Office application and shared Office features so
technically the application specific questions should be asked in a
newsgroup dedicated to the specific application. :)

My viewpoint is if I know the answer I'll answer it. Depending on
whether I think they'll have follow-up questions or may have
additional application specific questions I'll also note a more
appropriate group for future questions. I also know which experts in
the various application groups cover this one and I'll leave questions
I know they can answer for them. I do direct posters with Office
questions to a more appropriate newsgroup but that's usually for posts
containing more advanced questions or if I think it will take several
replies/follow-ups to find their answer.

What I've found interesting lately is I've noticed numerous Windows
and IE questions that *are* off-topic to this group getting answers.
They aren't redirected nor is there any mention of where future
questions should be directed.

IMHO that shouldn't be the case. This is an Office newsgroup. Traffic
and the range of questions asked around here is bad enough - we
shouldn't be encouraging off-topic posts.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
