How do I set Powerpoint up to automatically format pictures?

I have to insert a lot of pics into a powerpoint show, but it's very annoying
because they are inserted far too big for a slide. Then I have to format them
and slide them down into position. I had to do this once before and could
swear that I found a way to make PP do all of this automatically, but now I
can't find that function. Anybody know how to do this?

They seem to have cut that rather useful feature out of PPT 2000. I even
looked it up in the help files and that came up snake eyes.
