I don't want Word to turn email addresses in documents into underlined
links. How do I stop this permanently?

Which version? In Word 2003, Tools - AutoCorrect Options - AutoFormat As
You Type tab... remove the check next to "Internet and network paths with
hyperlinks". Note: you cannot unbundle email addresses from other kinds of
hyperlinks. It's all or nothing.

In Word 2007, click the Office button - Word Options - Proofing -
AutoCorrect Options - AutoFormat As You Type tab, etc.

Thanks - its 2003. You've answered the question.

In my own experience, Word 2002 will change the link to normal
text if you give CTRL-Z with the cursor positioned just after
the autocorrected link. This is useful if you only want de-link
a few addresses since you can do it as you go and is the
standard method for cancelling an autocorrect.
