How do I tell if a shape is displayed behind text?

How can you tell if a shape is set to display behind text? I have one shape
and if I set it to display behind the text the ZOrder is still 1. I need to
delete the shape and recreate it. I would like the keep the shape behind the
text if that's how it was originally displayed.

Unfort, Word is plain useless in this area. The programmatic handling
of floating objects is abysmal.
