How do I update fields in a large Word document?

I regularly work on 300- to 500-page documents in Word and have yet to find
an easy way to update all linked references and updated pictures. Does anyone
have suggestions?

How about Ctrl + A, F9?
Or try Tools>Options>Print>make sure 'Update fields' is checked, Print
Preview your document?
